White House, OpenAI, and Google want to bypass copyright, privacy, and patent law to dominate in 'AI'
The White House is initiating an AI Action Plan that "will define priority policy actions to enhance America’s position as an AI powerhouse and prevent unnecessarily burdensome requirements from hindering private sector innovation."
Those 'unnecessarily burdensome requirements' are copyright, privacy, and patents.
OpenAI and Google allege that because they are not allowed to include artwork, writing, videos, and other media that they do not own and do not have permission to use in their datasets for their AI that they will lose the race against China. In short, they claim it's 'a matter of national security'.
The reality is that generative AI technologies as they exist today are ALREADY a national security risk THEMSELVES:
- Generative 'AI' technology is now the leading source of disinformation according to Google's own researchers. (Source: https://www.404media.co/google-says-ai-now-leading-disinformation-vector-and-is-severely-undercounting-the-problem/)
- Generative 'AI' technology has enabled users to create deepfake nudes of minors that spread in high schools. (Source: https://www.404media.co/what-was-she-supposed-to-report-police-report-shows-how-a-high-school-deepfake-nightmare-unfolded/)
- Generative 'AI' technology enables scammers to create more convincing scams than ever before. (Source: https://www.404media.co/joe-rogan-taylor-swift-andrew-tate-ai-deepfake-youtube-medicare-ads/)
Furthermore, generative 'AI' technologies are not actually the 'artificial general intelligence' that they pretend to be. They overpromise and underdeliver:
- 'AI' chatbots made up court cases that lawyers cited. (Source: https://www.404media.co/lawyers-caught-citing-ai-hallucinated-cases-call-it-a-cautionary-tale/)
- 'AI' chatbots cannot distinguish satire, humor, and misinformation from actual information and surfaces disastrous results. (Source: https://www.404media.co/google-is-paying-reddit-60-million-for-fucksmith-to-tell-its-users-to-eat-glue/)
That is only a tiny sample of the problems 'AI' technology cause today. Its only use cases are misinformation, disinformation, nonconsensual deepfakes, and scams. No legitimate organization is benefiting from 'AI', and so our tax dollars should not be dedicated to subsidize and enrich the private companies to develop the technology further.
ACTION
By 8:59pm PST, please leave a public comment on the Federal Register's website with:
- a short snippet of what you are and where you fit in the industry
- your own anecdotes on how generative AI technology affects your experience searching the web and only seeing AI slop, and sharing your work online and having it scraped for the profit of others.
- any examples of how 'AI' technologies themselves are national security risks for misinformation, disinformation, nonconsensual deepfakes, and scams.
- any examples of how generative 'AI' and chatbot technology is NOT actually 'artificial general intelligence' and that it may return incorrect information that it presents as fact.
Public comments for the AI Action Plan have been opened since February 25, but if you are honest with yourself, you know you wouldn't have left a comment earlier without more urgency. So leave one now.
